Consumer protection law did eventually catch up with them, but no court ruling can undo the stress and disruption of having an unfinished roof.

And never pay the full amount upfront – a reasonable deposit is normal, but the balance should be paid only once you’re happy with the finished work.
Also be cautious of anyone who turns up at your door uninvited offering to fix your roof. Reputable roofing companies rely on their local reputation and don’t need to cold-call homeowners.
